Story Behind the Music

Mama Say

Co-Writer: Chip Nelson \ Producer: Daniel Martin

This song is based on a toxic friendship I had at a younger age. Mama Says talks about a girl recognizing her troublesome ways and paints a picture of her following in her “Mother’s” footsteps. The footsteps I was truly following were not those of my Mother but rather of a close friend I looked up to. I fell into the typical adolescent trap of trying to be someone I was not in order to be accepted by those I placed unwarranted value on. It resulted in me finding myself in compromising and detrimental situations. For years, my low self-esteem and lack of self-worth led me to believe I needed certain people in my life to feel whole. This song emerged from my empowering realization that I did not need them.
